Sri Muda Assemblyman's Sedition Case Set For Mention June 20

SHAH ALAM, April 25 (Bernama) -- The Sessions Court here Monday set June 20 for mention of a sedition case involving Sri Muda Assemblyman Shuhaimi Shafiei.

Judge Slamat Yahya set the date following an application by Shuhami's lawyer, Nizam Bashir.

Shuhaimi, 43, had pleaded not guilty last Feb 7 to a charge with publishing a seditious article in his blog, http://srimuda.blogspot.com on Dec 30, last year.

The offence was allegedly committed at Pusat Khidmat Rakyat, 6/2, Jalan Anggerik Vanilla R 31/R, Kota Kemuning, here.

He can be jailed up to three years or fined up to RM5,000 if found guilty under Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948.

Nizam had applied for a new date pending an application to the High Court by Shuhaimi to strike out the charge.

He said the High Court had set May 31 for case management and that the defence would need time to prepare.

Last April 1, Shuhaimi filed a notice seeking to strike out the charge against him on the grounds that the Sedition Act 1948 contravened Article 10 of the Federal Constitution.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Syakimah Ibrahim appeared for the prosecution at today's proceeding.
